Has anyone ever gone 34-0-0?
No. Not in the Bundesliga, and not in any comparable league. That is the entire premise of this game — and the reason a perfect season is so much harder than an unbeaten one.
Unbeaten is hard. Perfect is something else entirely.
Football fans use "invincible" loosely, but it almost always means unbeaten — a season without a defeat. Draws are allowed, and there are usually plenty of them. A perfect season means winning every single match: no defeats and no draws either. In a 34-game Bundesliga season that is 34 wins, 0 draws, 0 losses. It has never happened, and the gap between "unbeaten" and "perfect" is far wider than it looks.
Here is the reason, in one thought. Suppose you are so dominant that you win 80% of your matches and lose almost none. Over 34 games, the chance of winning every one is 0.8 to the power of 34 — roughly one in two thousand. And no side in history has ever been an 80% favourite in every fixture, home and away, in February, with injuries, against a team fighting relegation who only need a point.
The ones who came closest
Bayer Leverkusen, 2023-24 — unbeaten at last
The most important season in recent Bundesliga history. Leverkusen — a club so synonymous with finishing second that the country nicknamed them "Neverkusen" — went the entire league season without losing: 28 wins, 6 draws, 0 defeats, 90 points, and the first championship in their history. It was the first unbeaten season in Bundesliga history, and it ended Bayern's eleven-year title streak.
And still, six draws. Six times, across nine months, a team good enough to go unbeaten failed to win. That is the distance between unbeaten and perfect.
Bayern München, 2012-13 — the points record
Statistically the finest Bundesliga campaign ever: 29 wins, 4 draws, 1 defeat, 91 points, a treble, and a Champions League won at Wembley. This was Bayern at their absolute peak, and they still dropped points seven times in 34 games.
Arsenal, 2003-04 — the original Invincibles
The most famous unbeaten season in modern football: 38 games, 26 wins, 12 draws, 0 defeats. Note the twelve draws. Arsenal's Invincibles are legendary precisely because going a season without losing is so rare — but they drew nearly a third of their matches.
Juventus, 2011-12 — unbeaten, and even more draws
38 games, 23 wins, 15 draws, no defeats. An unbeaten title, and fifteen games they could not win.
Preston North End, 1888-89 — the closest anyone has come
The original Invincibles, in the first ever Football League season: 18 wins, 4 draws, 0 defeats from 22 games, plus the FA Cup won without conceding a single goal. Even in a 22-game league, against Victorian opposition, in an era of wild talent imbalances — four draws. Nobody has got closer to perfect in a major league since, and that was over 135 years ago.
Why draws are the real enemy
Losses are the thing fans fear, but draws are what actually kill a perfect season. A great team rarely loses; a great team draws all the time. It only takes one afternoon where the opposition keeper has the game of his life, or a deflection at the death, or a 0-0 in the rain at a ground where nothing ever happens.
This is why 34-0-0's Hardcore mode ends your run on a draw as well as a defeat. It is not cruelty — it is the actual maths of the thing. Any run that treats a draw as survivable is not chasing a perfect season.
Has a perfect season ever happened anywhere?
In smaller or more lopsided competitions, yes — leagues where one professional club faces part-time opposition can and do produce 100% records. But in a top-five European league, with 34 or 38 games against full-time professional teams, it has never been done. The closest analogues live in other sports: unbeaten runs in American football's regular season, or dominant streaks in basketball, both of which inspired the perfect-season games this one is a cousin of.
So what would it actually take?
Run the numbers in this game's own engine and the picture is clear. A squad rated in the mid-80s — a genuine title favourite — has a chance of going 34-0-0 well under one in a thousand. Push the rating towards 90, stack your lines with legends, and it climbs, but it never becomes likely. It stays a lottery ticket that you have to buy 34 times in a row and win every time.
